South County Golf Club

southcounty.pngAfter a great evening seeing a fantastic performance by the Kilcock Musical and Drama Society, a musical called ‘Sweet Charity’, we arrived at South County to find the gates locked! Luckily there was a bit of a lay by up the road so we parked there for the night and awoke to a much better morning - chilly, but blue skies and the promise of a fine day.

South County is an 18 hole parkland course in south Co. Dublin, near Brittas. From the first tee there’s a great view out over the course and the surrounding countryside. Magnificent though the view was I got the impression that it was just going to be a boring course but I could hardly have been more wrong. The spectacular views continued - there’s barely a place on the course you could call a bad view. And whilst it did feel wide open the holes were not boring in any way. The front 9 holes had a different feel to the back 9. They were more elevated and had better views, whereas the back 9 was lower and had all the water features on the course, including a couple of excellent par 5s where a stream criss-crosses the fairway.

Big thanks to Liam and Paul who kept us entertained on the way round.

Thomas says:
Very much enjoyed this course and I played some decent golf too. The openness does not detract from the course at all but will benefit when some of the newer trees are more mature. The views all over are pretty damn fine!

Holes 10 and 13 are two of the nicest holes on the course - the 10th is a par 4 over a hill and the 13th is a par 5 with a stream cutting across the fairway. And you can add to those the 16th, a par 3 over a pond (which duly collected my ball).

Clive says:
I knew I had to concentrate on my golf today when playing with these two friendly brothers who played off 6 and 9. I have to say I rather surprised myself and did well, at least on the outward 9. It certainly is a course that will help those whose drives tend to be wayward but, like Thomas, I found South County a fine track. The inward nine is more picturesque and the dogleg 12th is lovely. The 17th is a very long par 4 and a great test of golf.
Today’s company helped as we love to play with the locals and tell them about all the courses we’ve played around Ireland. The young assistant pro, Lloyd, told me he had played a lot of courses, including some in Northern Ireland. The pro comes from Banbridge.

One point however is that very few people down south seem to have played our wonderful courses in Northern Ireland - I encourage them to come north and savour the excellence of our courses.
