Strokestown Golf Club
Date played: 8 April 2007, 3pm
Weather: Cloudy, patchy sunshine, chilly
We came to Strokestown not expecting much and sad to say that we got even less than that!
We knew it was a 9 hole course but given the time of daOy we weren’t expecting any bother making it round the course. But we were wrong. Between arriving and making bite of lunch a fourball and two twoballs made it onto the course and it was slow with a capital S L O W.
The course itself was no consolation for the length of time were having to stand and look at it. It’s pretty much a field and you go up, down and across it. There’s nothing of interest and to cap it all, there were temporary greens.
We were so unimpressed that we left after 9 holes. There was little compelling reason to repeat the nine holes, especially since pulling teeth would be quicker more desirable way to pass the time.
Course condition:
Overall it was poor. The fairways were pretty rough and the greens (both temporary and proper) looked unhealthy. The greens were pretty fast though.
Clubhouse/facilities:
A small clubhouse with simple but adequate changing facilities. I had a quick look into the bar are and it looked comfortable enough. It had views down the first.
Thomas says:
Slow play is awful. By about the third I was for walking off and by about the fifth I was just going through the motions. It wouldn’t have been so bad had the course been in any way interesting. I just wasn’t. It was a most uninspiring course which I will try to forget. I’m sure I will find that easy.
Clive says:
The main reason for going to Strokestown was just to tick it off in our book. I feared it wasn’t going to be much when I contacted the secretary before we got there. He didn’t seem to know much. The people in front of us were just awfully slow. Like Thomas it would be hard to recommend this course – but at least we marked it off.
